WatchParty privacy policy

WatchParty lets people watch a video together in sync, with text chat and optional voice calls. This policy covers the browser extension, the injectable script and the mobile client.

What we handle

• Display name. The name you type. It is shown to the other people in your room and stored only in your own browser.
• Room state. The room code, the video being watched, the playback position, and whether playback is running. This is what makes playback sync.
• Chat messages. Text you send travels through our relay to the others in your room.
• Voice audio. Only while you are in a call and only after you grant microphone access. Audio goes browser to browser, and through a relay only when a direct connection is impossible. Nothing is recorded.

What we do not handle

• We never touch video content. Playback happens inside your own browser, on your own account, with the streaming service's own player.
• We do not read, store or transmit your streaming passwords, cookies or account details.
• We do not run analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind.
• We do not require an account, an email address or a login.

Where data lives

• Your display name and server preference are stored locally in your browser.
• Room state and chat live in the memory of our relay server only while a room exists. Rooms are discarded after two hours of being empty, and nothing is written to a database.
• Voice audio is not stored anywhere, by us or by the relay.

Third parties

Voice calls use Cloudflare's TURN service to relay audio when a direct connection between callers is not possible, and Cloudflare's STUN service to discover network paths. Chat and playback state do not pass through Cloudflare.

Permissions the extension asks for, and why

• storage: remember your display name and relay preference.
• scripting and activeTab: show a short on page notice when you click the icon on a page where WatchParty cannot run.
• offscreen: capture the microphone and play the voices of other callers outside the streaming page, so the streaming site never gets access to your microphone.
• Access to youtube.com and netflix.com: find the video player and control playback, and add the party sidebar.

Removing your data

Leave the party and uninstall the extension: local settings are removed with it, and the room disappears from the relay as soon as it is empty.
